After the First World War in France: an American diplomat is residing with his wife and son in a mansion in order to take part in the negotiations for the Versailles Treaty. Neglected by his authoritarian parents, the boy develops malevolent traits ... Brady Corbet`s rousing debut film, based on the same named short story by Paul Sartre, investigates the origins of fascism and confronts us with the depths of human nature. Monumental pictures and an oppressive soundtrack create a ”nightmarish” treat - just as in the manner of past masters Dreyer, Bresson and Kubrick whom Corbet named in the online magazine ”The Mirror Cube” as influences.
