SIRA follows the eponymous Sira who, on her way to her fiancé Jean-Sidi with her nomadic family, becomes the victim of a brutal attack by Islamists. The leader of the terrorists kidnaps Sira, brutally rapes her and leaves her to die in the desert. Against all odds, she survives by hiding in caves. When she discovers the Islamists' camp, she hatches a plan of revenge. Although she is the only daughter - or perhaps because she is an only daughter - she is seen as less conformant to the traditional gender roles of her nomadic family. This provides her with an advantage in surviving the ordeal.
Berlinale Audience Award winner.
