Pierre and Marthe could not be more different. Marthe comes from a poor background and works in an artificial-flower workshop. That is all the art she needs in her life. Pierre, her future husband, is a bohemian "painter of happiness". He will mature into an important representative of French painting in the 20th century. Cécile de France plays Marthe, an artist's muse with a gruff character. In the shadow of Pierre and his young female models, Marthe is simultaneously his most painted subject. Thanks to Cécile de France's multi-faceted acting performance, we are able to explore the work of the artist and his environment from a close-up perspective.
Director's Biography:Before moving into directing, Martin Provost was a sought-after actor in French television series for more than 20 years. He won seven Césars in 2008 with his film biography about the painter Séraphine Louis.
