The Spanish Civil War. The cabaret duo ”Carmela and Paulino” is on tour for the soldiers at the front. Carmela sings frivolous songs and shows a bit of leg dancing flamenco. Paulino performs political cabaret, heroic songs and as a highlight does a flatulist solo. But since their takings aren`t enough to live on, they set off for Valencia. On the way they fall into the hands of the Fascists. A theatre-mad officer, saves them from death: the performers are made to cheer for Franco in front of the Fascists - and in front of a group of Polish prisoners, whose execution is scheduled for the following morning. Carmen Maura won the Goya and the Felix for her performance in this tragicomedy.
