Catholic priest Sang-hyun becomes a vampire after an experiment goes wrong. His thirst for blood coupled with a passionate but destructive affair with a woman named Tae-ju leads to a downward spiral of violence, guilt and despair. In the typical style of Park Chan-Wook (OLDBOY), explicit and sexualised depictions of violence contribute towards the intensely disturbing atmosphere. Through its modern staging, the film succeeds in breathing new life into the vampire myth. THIRST was honoured with the Jury Prize in Cannes in 2009 and won Best Visual Effects at the Asian Film Awards. Filmdienst writes: “An allusive, intelligent study of morality.”
