Based on Alexei Tolstoy’s chillingly romantic tale “La Famille du Vourdalak”, the film tells the story of a village family in Russia in the 18th century. Following the return of the patriarch from a campaign of revenge, his family notices changes in him. Has he become a vourdalak? Director Adrien Beau loves the cinema of the 1960s and 70s. In his feature-film debut, shot on 16mm with natural light and handmade special effects, Beau continuously tightens the tension screw. Paranoia and horror mount within the family as they desperately try to find out if there is anything human left inside their father. Screen Daily certifies “cult potential”.
