Eighteenth-century Austria: poverty, deprivation, hard physical labour and a large portion of superstition under the guise of the church characterise society. It is in this atmosphere that the film DES TEUFELS BAD tells the story of the sensitive Agnes, who is at risk of being broken by the demands of society. The marriage she enters into remains loveless and childless. She cannot return to her parents without bringing shame upon them. The situation seems hopeless until she finds an extreme solution that seems to do justice to all parties. Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala tell this true story with great empathy and attention to detail.

Director's Biography:Veronika Franz, born in Vienna in 1965, began her career as a film journalist and has been working with director and film producer Ulrich Seidl as an artistic collaborator and screenwriter since 1997. Severin Fiala, born in 1985, studied screenwriting and directing at the Vienna Film Academy. Their first collaboration was the documentary Kern about the actor and director Peter Kern. This was followed by the psychological thriller Ich seh ich seh, which premiered in Venice in 2014, and the English-language production The Lodge (2019).
