Director's Biography:Detroit was and remains the domain of many influential jazz musicians, such as Geri Allen and Ron Carter. The documentary THE BEST OF THE BEST: JAZZ FROM DETROIT explores the “Motor City” of Detroit as a central metropolis of jazz culture. Inspired by the book “Jazz from Detroit”, written by Mark Stryker and published in 2019, the documentary combines insights into Detroit’s jazz culture in relation to the city’s industrial development and the relationship between the black community and the jazz scene. The result is a comprehensive historical mosaic that provides deep insights into the cultural and political conditions in Detroit in the 20th and 21st centuries.
