This is the story of Seyran Ateş's personal and ideological struggle for the modernisation of Islam. She is convinced that fighting radical Islam can only be done with Islam itself. Thus, in her liberal mosque there is no gender segregation and no one is excluded because of their sexual orientation.
On her journey through the world, she meets many different people who are connected by their faith: Sex workers in a brothel or female imams in China. But the film is also a journey through her life, from a Muslim girl in Turkish slums to a female imam who dares to challenge her own religion.
Director's Biography:Nefise Özkal Lorentzen is a Turkish-Norwegian author and filmmaker. With a degree in political science and media studies, she has produced several controversial documentaries on Islam, some of which she also directed.
