14-year-old Elle Marja comes from a family of reindeer herders. In 1930s Sweden, the young Sámi girl attends a boarding school, as do many at the time. It is, however, forbidden to speak the Sámi languages there. Her everyday life is also characterised by humiliation and prejudice. In order to escape this life that is dominated by discrimination, she finally sees only one way out and renounces her Sámi origins.
