1962 in Bamako, a little more than a year after the decolonisation of Mali, the attainment of independence and the founding of a republic: the young people dance the twist, listen to rock'n'roll, dream of a political renaissance and praise their ideological role models Lumumba and Ho Chi-Minh. But decolonisation is complicated and the interests of many have to be satisfied. Samba, sent deep into the bush to convert the villagers to the collective virtues of revolutionary freedom, feels a bit like a preacher in the desert. In the midst of this turbulence, the young socialist falls in love with Lara, who is in an arranged marriage.
