In the summer of 1979, Ester returns to her hometown of Alta in the north of Norway in order to take up a job as a teacher. However, like many others at this time, she conceals her Sámi heritage. Her cousin Mikkhal, in contrast, is proud of it and campaigns for the rights of his people. He takes Ester along to demonstrations against the construction of a reservoir, for which a riverside settlement should be demolished. As the protests continue to grow, Ester realises how important the resistance is - not least for her own sake. Soon she has to make a decision... A convincingly recounted film about the legendary Alta conflict, which had a significant impact on Sámi politics in Norway.

Director's Biography:Ole Giæver was born in 1977 and his films THE MOUNTAIN and OUT OF NATURE screened successfully at the Berlinale, among others. With LET THE RIVER FLOW (audience awards in Gothenburg and Tromsø) he tells a very personal story, as his father himself was part of the Alta movement.
