Casually flowing Afrobeat combined with razor-sharp brass sections - that is the sound of the legendary big bands from Mali, whose music embodied the hope for independence in the 1970s. But with a coup d'état, the music also fell abruptly silent. The members of the Berlin band The Omniversal Earkestra rediscover the rare recordings of Salif Keita, Sory Bamba and Abdoulaye Diabaté and are full of enthusiasm. Without hesitation, the band embarks on a road trip through Mali to track down the heroes of their record collection and their legendary brass sections. Will they succeed in breathing new life into the almost forgotten songs and arrangements?

Director's Biography:Markus CM Schmidt, born in Speyer in 1967, has worked primarily as a film editor and sound recordist for internationally acclaimed and award-winning cinema and TV productions. With the documentary THE LAST CATCH (2012) he won the major prizes in Turin and Ludwigsburg.
