Rejected by her husband and village, farmer Katalin Varga sets off on a journey through the Carpathians with her son to find his biological father. "The dark revenge story revolves around a tragic figure who resists the role of the victim and is lost to life over it in inhospitable forest landscapes. A dark fairy tale, exceptionally virtuosic both visually and on the soundtrack." (FILMDIENST). Strickland's self-financed feature debut won a Silver Bear for Outstanding Sound Design at the Berlinale. At the European Film Awards, the revenge drama set in a nightmarishly exaggerated Transylvania was named European Discovery 2009.
