JE'VIDA is the Skolt Sámi first name of the film’s protagonist, but since her youth she has called herself Lida, the Finnish version. She tries to hide her Sámi origins. When she travels to Lapland - with a niece she has never met before - in order to clarify inheritance issues, she is finally forced to confront a painful past after years of repression. JE'VIDA addresses the consequences of Finland’s assimilation policy and is the first film to be shot in Skolt Sámi, a minority language spoken by only around 300 people in the Sápmi region. Filmed in poetic black-and-white images and with a wonderfully defiant leading actress.
