The Braunschweig International Film Festival has its very own Berlin Wall history. Honoring a guest from “behind the wall” was a focus of our programme from the festival`s inception in 1987 until the demise of the GDR in 1990. In 1989 we had a very special guest: Roland Gräf. His influence on the DEFA cinema as an author, cinematographer and director cannot be overestimated. None the less all the cinemas were empty – the fall of the Berlin Wall was happening right in this moment. 25 years later Roland Gräf is back to present one film which is very dear to his heart and share with us his views on the fall and the unification. But we want to get the bigger picture. We take a look to Northern Ireland, the Near East and the Far East. Places where walls still separate, segregate and isolate people. The Peaceful Revolution an inimitable event in the history of mankind? We don`t hope so.
