With the foundation of Extinction Rebellion in 2018, a new kind of climate activism began. The guiding principle is to use direct action to put pressure on governments around the world to take real action against climate change. Tired of government inaction against the existential threat, founders Gayle Bradbrook and Roger Hallam used their knowledge and experience in promoting social change to build a new kind of movement. Extinction Rebellion has now pushed the climate agenda in nearly 100 countries with measurable success, but not without backlash. The documentary EXXTINCTION EMERGENCY provides a multifaceted and informative insight into the history of the still young movement.

The film will be followed by a panel discussion on current forms of protest in times of climate change. Activists Julia Förster (Leinemasch BLEIBT) and Lina Schinköthe (Letzte Generation) will provide insights into the motivation and objectives of their actions. The panel will be moderated by BIFF association member and co-initiator of the film section, Marcus Aurelius Jensen, a self-employed architect from Braunschweig with a focus on sustainable construction works.
