Germany after the war. The naive, idealistic German-American, Leopold Kessler, wants to rebuild the destroyed country and takes on work as a sleeping car conductor for the Zentropa railway network. He falls in love with Katharina, not realizing that she is a pro-Nazi terrorist. A Kafkaesque film in black and white.
