Based on the novel by Nathaniel Hawthorne (1850) and a screenplay by Tankred Dorst, the story of a kind of precursor to emancipation is reconstructed: Senta Berger plays the mother of an illegitimate daughter who is pilloried as an adulteress in the American Puritan town of Salem at the end of the 17th century because she does not want to reveal the name of the child's father. Her husband is thought to be missing. As the pinnacle of her humiliation, she is forced to wear a scarlet "A" on her chest at all times for seven years. The branding as a sign of adultery is the worst form of social ostracism. Then her husband reappears...

Director's Biography:Together with other author filmmakers, director and photographer Wim Wenders (*1945) founded the Filmverlag der Autoren in 1971. Studied at the Munich University of Television and Film. Wenders was president of the European Film Academy from 1996 to 2020.
