“Dearest hits audiences twice, aiming first for the heart and later for the head”, states Variety. Based on real happenings, Peter Chan (AMERICAN DREAMS IN CHINA) deals perceptively with the problem of child abduction and its consequences in China. In the film the three-year-old son of the married couple Wen Jun and Xiaojuan who live in the metropolis of Shenzen is abducted. Despite all obstacles Wen Jun does not give up the hope of finding his son again. Apart from an emotionally moving depiction, the controversial melodrama surprises us with a twist which invites us to reflect on right and wrong and cleverly challenges the audience.
