Filmmaker Sissel Morell Dargis takes us into the heart of the Brazilian favelas to the hidden world of the Balomania. For the secret society of Balomania, building and flying gigantic hot air balloons is an art form and has been part of their cultural heritage since colonial times. Declared illegal by the authorities, forced underground and persecuted by the police and gangs, we witness their obsession and sacrifice to build the spectacular balloons. It takes 100 people to raise the 70-metre-tall balloons into the sky. BALOMANIA is a personal, explosive film about freedom while challenging our ideas about the favelas.

Director's Biography:Sissel Morell Dargis is a Danish director and screenwriter who came into contact with the art form of balomania at an early age. She herself worked as a graffiti artist, directed a video game and made short films. BALOMANIA is her first feature film.
