Approximation - Demarcation: Films from Israel
On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the diplomatic relations between the State of Israel and the Federal Republic of Germany, initiated at the 12th of May, 1965, we present a variety of Israeli movies of that period: Many classics in addition to some sensational younger movies. Genre cinema is as well represented as masterpieces of art-house production. A small emphasis lies on the 1970s, maybe the artistically most productive and widespread period of Israel’s movie history. Israeli movie production oriented itself towards France and Hollywood, searched for ways of cooperation even in the FRG and provided a certain international presence in cinemas for the young and heavily contested nation. The idea: diplomacy through art was at the center of our selection: How does Israel present itself at which point in time? How did the nation position itself in the greater political whole? Which aspects of its identity were emphasized more effectively, which were dealt with in smaller productions? And what do we remember about it today? In cooperation with German-Israeli Society
