An episodic film about four destinies in present-day China – the acts of violence shown are based on actual newspaper stories. Injustice, exploitation and corruption are shown to be prevalent and the Chinese people as a mass of industrial nomads confronted by the harshness of state controlled capitalism.
Jia Zhangke
Born 1970 in Fenyang, Province Shanxi, one of the most important directors of the late 90s. After studying painting he made his first feature film XIAO WU in 1997 which was in the tradition of Roberto Rossellini. For STILL LIFE he received the Golden Lion in Venice.
