Life is not exactly exciting in the Brandenburg province, especially not for Markus who is queer. The young man takes care of his demented grandmother Alma and her partner Sabine, has a mini-job, and once in while he meets someone through Grindr. But for him, that is not enough. He longs for Berlin, for the big city, and for an urban family of his own choice. His bags are already packed. But Alma’s condition worsens, and Markus falls in love with the TV technician Duc. Suddenly he must make up his mind. With great skill, NEUBAU avoids the genre specific cliches of a coming-out drama. Instead, the film dives into the world of an unusual human being and shows it in all its facets.

Director's Biography:Johannes Maria Schmit, born 1981 in Trier, studied at the Ernst Busch Academy in Berlin. Later, he became in-house director at the Centraltheater Leipzig. Since 2011, he works as freelance director in Germany and Sweden. NEUBAU is his debut film.
