In South Africa in 1985, we see an 18-year-old who is accepted into the soldier's choir "Canary" for his military service. By this means he hopes to have escaped the dreaded drill, but things turn out differently ("a choir is like a battalion"). On a tour he begins to question the repressive system of order around him when he falls in love with one of his singing comrades. The film, peppered with much surprising imagery, is underscored by a captivating New Wave soundtrack. Without becoming moral, it shows what nationalism and religion can do to young people against the historical background of the apartheid regime – "and how to learn to fly with other outsiders" (queer filmfestival).
Director's Biography:Born in Cape Town. Studied theatre directing. For his work as a young theatre director he was awarded numerous prizes for best young talent. CANARY received 5 awards at the Silverskerm Festival in Cape Town, among them: Best Film.
